Founder Bruce Cohen

For decades, I have used Ember as a unique creative concept for my work and my approach to counseling and education. Embervision is: Ember, as unlimited potential and Vision, the application of that potential to realize an aspiration. Embervision®, Ember®, and Embervisionary® services and materials were created to implement this concept.

I loved my grandfather. He had many amazing abilities, but one of them truly captured my imagination. He would ask me to bring him an empty soup can and, with a pair of old tin snips and a little cutting and bending, he could transform, in a moment, that soup can into a flying dove. This was not a magic trick. He could really do that. He was able to recognize and to realize the hidden potential in that soup can, something that no one else could see.

My grandfather and I often talked of how the initials of his name – M.B.R. – sounded out the word ember. So, as a young person, I began to think a lot about what an ember is. You can look at an ember in two ways: either as a remnant of a dying fire or as latent potential harboring the core of a brilliant fire. Those who view it the second way know that, although it may glow quietly for a long time, with a breath of air and the right fuel, the ember will transform into a roaring fire. The line between the two states is very fine, but very real.

It is much the same with people. I believe the core of each person – one’s essence, gifts, nature, and values – is like that ember, loaded with possibility and waiting to be fully engaged. Attuning someone to that core, through careful listening, guidance and reinforcement, is like blowing on an ember.

For more than thirty years, Bruce Cohen, J.D., has advised, counseled, advocated for, and mentored thousands of professionals, leaders, and students at all levels across the U.S. and from some ninety countries. His clients represent diverse disciplines including business, law, government, medicine, psychology, academia, international affairs, the clergy, the media, and the arts and sciences.

As president of Embervision, he advances clients’ professional, academic, organizational, and personal development. In this work, he draws on his critical listening and problem-solving experience to help clients attain the clarity to respond to challenges, communicate more effectively, and gain a deeper understanding of their strengths. His work also focuses on assisting clients to crystallize a vision and effect strategies to bring about their highest, truest goals.

Bruce has lectured widely. He served as the dean responsible for the graduate program and international legal studies at Harvard Law School. Prior to this, as the dean charged with student affairs and international programs at the Touro Law Center, he played a central role in the school's early development. Before law school, he served as an academic advisor to undergraduate and graduate students at the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences of the University of Southern California.

He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, is a trained mediator, and has served as an NGO main representative to the United Nations.

Bruce has travelled throughout the world. While a law student, he was influenced by his study of Motivational Psychology with David McClelland and of Negotiation and Conflict Resolution with Roger Fisher. He received an A.B. from the University of Southern California, studied at Cambridge University, England and holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School.
